Basic Concepts and Notation

چکیده
A set is formally an undefined term, but intuitively it is a (possibly empty) collection of arbitrary objects. A set is usually denoted by curly braces and some (optional) restrictions. Examples of sets are {1,2,3}, {hi, there}, and {k | k is a perfect square}. The symbol ∈ denotes set membership , while the symbol ∉ denotes set non-membership ; for example, 7∈{p | p prime} states that 7 is a prime number, while q∉{0,2,4,6,...} states that q is not an even number. Some common sets are denoted by special notation:

Tensor spaces – the basics
We present the basic concepts of tensor products of vectors spaces, exploiting the special properties of vector spaces as opposed to more general modules: Introduction (1), Basic multilinear algebra (2), Tensor products of vector spaces (3), Tensor products of matrices (4), Inner products on tensor spaces (5), Direct sums and tensor products (6), Background concepts and notation (7), Discussion...
متن کاملMathematical Introduction
In this section we review our basic algebraic concepts and notation. For more information, look up a basic textbook in linear algebra [1]. 1.1 Logic and sets All mathematics is based on an underlying understanding of logic. It starts of course with proposition logic, but predicate logic is the most relevant. We borrow from it its basic notation, and its basic modes of reasoning. Examples of (so...
متن کاملThe GUIDO Notation Format: A Novel Approach for Adequately Representing Score-Level Music
GUIDO Music Notation is a novel approach for adequately representing score-level music. Based on a simple, yet powerful and easily extensible formalism, GUIDO is realised as a plain-text, human-readable and platform independent format. The key feature of our design is representational adequacy: simple musical concepts can be expressed in a simple way, while complex musical notions may require m...

متن کاملVectorial capacity, basic reproduction number, force of infection and all that: formal notation to complete and adjust their classical concepts and equations.
A dimensional analysis of the classical equations related to the dynamics of vector-borne infections is presented. It is provided a formal notation to complete the expressions for the Ross' Threshold Theorem, the Macdonald's basic reproduction "rate" and sporozoite "rate", Garret-Jones' vectorial capacity and Dietz-Molineaux-Thomas' force of infection. The analysis was intended to provide a for...
متن کاملPromoting versatile learning of higher order concepts in algebra using the computer
This paper1 reports a comparison between a traditional skill-based approach to algebra and an alternative approach using a combination of computer programming, activities enacting the computer processes manipulating variables, and the use of computer software which evaluates algebraic expressions written in either traditional notation or BASIC. The results of the experiments indicate the value ...
